ProQuest is pleased to announce the winner of the 2008 CSA Sociological Abstracts Discovery Prize. The contest, open to both faculty and students, offers a $3000 grand prize and $500 honorable mention for the best use of CSA Sociological Abstracts in assisting in teaching and learning. Prize entries provide practical examples of how CSA Sociological Abstracts can aid in the advancement of sociological scholarship and research.
"I was impressed to see the level of collaboration, thought, and creativity that went into all the submissions," said Mary Sauer-Games, vice president of publishing for ProQuest. "The essays and assignments we not only engaging -- each one also demonstrated careful use of relevant facts and truly helps promote students’ enthusiasm for social sciences."
The grand prize winner for 2008 was co-written by Christopher Bondy, Department of Sociology & Anthropology and Tiffany Hebb, Coordinator of Library Instruction, both from Depauw University. Their essay assignment "Making Connections" using CSA Sociological Abstracts, helps students explore the interwoven nature of often disparate sociological concepts, and demonstrates how sociological concepts have application outside of the classroom.
An honorable mention was awarded to Shirley A. Jackson, Department of Sociology for Southern Connecticut State University for her essay, "Making Research 'Real'". Jackson’s essay assignment helped students increase their understanding of race and culture as a social phenomenon.
ProQuest is now accepting entries for the 2009 CSA Sociological Abstracts Discovery Prize.
Submissions should describe a sociological research project that involved use of CSA Sociological Abstracts and define how the project contributed to teaching and learning in sociology. Submissions will be evaluated by ProQuest in accordance with the following:
1.Innovation (creativity in use of CSA Sociological Abstracts)
2.Transferability (to other sociology courses or curricula)
3.ffectiveness (in advancing teaching, learning, and information literacy)
4.Scholarship (meets accepted standards of research)
