Every year in the United States, more than half a million babies are born too soon. Medical research supported by the March of Dimes is helping to improve babies’ chances of being born healthy and staying healthy. The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. In support of their mission, ProQuest joined thousands of compassionate teams across the country that support March for Babies.

ProQuest has a long history of supporting March of Dimes and this year the outreach has grown with employees from the Bethesda, MD and Louisville, KY offices getting involved along with employees from our corporate headquarters in Ann Arbor, MI. Each office participated in their local March for Babies Walk, raising money for this worthy cause. In addition to the walk, there were other opportunities for employees to get involved, like competing in a NCAA basketball tournament bracket challenge or trying their by luck bidding in the silent auction. In result, through the dedicated efforts of many ProQuest employees, we reached our goal of raising over $25,000 for the March of Dimes!

Annually, ProQuest sponsors the March for Babies Walk held at the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter. The event is truly a family affair where moms, dads, babies and even dogs participating in the walk. ProQuest hosts a stop along the three-mile trail, taking the liberty to provide some fun that will appeal to all ages. The theme this year was Building Blocks to a Better Start, featuring the toy Legos and characters from The Lego Movie. The pit stop included a bean-bag toss where kids could win prizes, a bounce house, a photo booth and provided healthy snacks and refreshments for participants to refuel and recharge. The main attraction however, was really the volunteers who dressed up as Lego characters. The costumes were a big hit and many of the kids took the time to stop to pose for pictures and even give hugs to the volunteers.

Helping to make the event a success, ProQuest employees volunteered hours of their time, personally making all of the costumes and props and dressing in those costumes to cheer on the walkers. Kristen Ladd, who has been an active volunteer for the March of Dimes for nearly 10 years shared, “I began volunteering for the March of Dimes when ProQuest introduced the opportunity to support the charity years ago. I appreciate the ability to support a cause that helps babies to be born healthy. I also love the chance that the event gives us to get creative.”

Every year the volunteers brainstorm ideas for the theme of the ProQuest stop along the trail and spend months preparing for the walk. Kristen confided, “We have fun making all of the props and costumes. A lot of thought and our time go into this event, but we do it because we really believe in the cause and we’re happy to spend our time benefitting the babies.”

The money raised for March of Dimes will go towards helping to:

  • Support all-important research offering preventions and solutions for babies born too soon or with birth defects
  • Educate women on things they can do to increase their chances of having a healthy baby
  • Provide comfort and information to families with a newborn in intensive care
  • Push for newborn screening and health insurance for all pregnant women and children.

ProQuest is thrilled with the result of our efforts this year and it would not be possible without the dedication of our invaluable employees. We look forward to continuing our support for this very worthy cause, helping to improve babies’ chances of being born healthy and staying healthy.
