Book review ezine Shelf Unbound’s Writing Competition for Best Independently Published Book now includes a prize for sports-related works. In addition to best overall winner, the competition will present the Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book, which carries a $1,000 cash prize. The winner, selected by the editors of Shelf Unbound, will be featured along with the winners and finalists of the larger competition in Shelf Unbound’s December/January 2015 issue, which is read by 125,000 book lovers in 65 countries. Entries are being accepted now through October 1.

The Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book honors the author of Lamb to the Slaughter, a popular novel that explored the world of boxing. Mr. Delohery, who died in 2011, was a civil engineer by training, but built a following for his writing after his novel’s publication in 2011. The novel has been translated into Spanish and is available via Amazon and Barnes & Noble. He also authored the short story The Deadly Smile.

“Pete's writing style immediately involves readers in the story and the life of all his characters,” said Mr. Delohery’s wife, Pat.

Lamb to the Slaughter exemplifies the extraordinary quality of today’s independently published books,” said Shelf Unbound publisher Margaret Brown. “We’re proud to honor Pete’s creativity and passion for writing with this award.”

The Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book is open to fiction and nonfiction works from self or independent publishers, producing five or fewer titles per year. Print or e-titles with any publication date are eligible for entry. There is no limit to the number of books an individual can enter; each book is a separate entry with a fee of $40. Entry deadline is midnight on October 1, with winners notified by November 2.

The Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book is part of the larger Shelf Unbound Writing Competition for Best Independently Published Book, sponsored by Bowker and Blurb. Official rules and submission details for the entire program can be found at Shelf Media Group’s contest rules page.
