This week we are running a special series featuring libraries in ProQuest Historical Newspapers.
Before there was a nationwide system of public libraries in the U.S. private libraries served the literary needs of those that could afford them. The Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway recognized the value of libraries and established a library for employees and their families. It was the “…earnest desire of management to see every man connected with the railroad a member of the library.”
