Having enjoyed several decades as a first-call session bassist in both New York and LA, Chuck Rainey has established a solo career as a singing/bass-playing frontman from his Dallas home base. He follows up 1999's Hangin Out Right (reviewed Fall '99) with Sing dr Dance, which is available on Amazon.com or from www.chuckrainey.com Says Chuck, "My concept was to reinterpret some of my favorite songs using a hybrid of new grooves with an urban adult sound." Rainey, a dozen of his Dallas musician pals, drummer Bernard Purdie, and guitarist Elliott Randall cut the tracks live at two local studios; then Chuck overdubbed his vocals and a bit more bass. His Warrior 6-string and prototype Washburn 4 acoustic bass guitar (both strung with La Bella roundwounds) went straight to the board via standard studio direct boxes. He then sent the original tracks through his pedalboard, adding various effects, including a DOD FX-62 Bass Stereo Chorus, DOD DFX-9 Digital Delay, DOD FX-20B Stereo Phaser, and Boss OC-2 Octave.
"Last Two Dollars": This is a cover of the hit by the late Johnny Taylor, one of my favorite R&B artists. We added more of a contemporary Latin percussion vibe, and I played a slap part and overdubbed a solo with my Warrior 6 and chorus pedal. Bernard Purdie came out to Dallas for a day and left us with this and another great drum track for the album. [Ex. 1 shows Rainey's slapped groove and trademark tasty double-stops...
