ProQuest Illuminates More Than Two Centuries of Key Global Events with the Launch of The Annual Register
Divided line

ANN ARBOR, Mich., November 8, 2007 - Researchers can now access nearly 250 years of world history, through a new online version of The Annual Register. The Annual Register is a classic 240+ volume reference work that provides a detailed chronicle of world events from 1758 to the current day. From world politics to society weddings, from the latest scientific discoveries to the weather, from the year's best-selling novels to obituaries of authors and other public figures - The Annual Register provides detailed historical background and a wealth of new information for research.

"From its inception, The Annual Register was meant to be entertaining, as well as enlightening," said Mary Sauer-Games, vice president, Chadwyck-Healey publishing.  "The online version of The Annual Register provides snapshot views of events as they unfolded, allowing the user to follow the historical progression using then-contemporary resources.  With plenty of human-interest stories and lively text, it's a good read and resource for undergraduates and academics alike."

The Annual Register has long been considered as essential reading by journalists, politicians, historians and anyone with an interest in current affairs.  For example, as a young officer serving in India in 1897, Winston Churchill asked his mother to send him the last 27 volumes of The Annual Register, so that he could study the accounts of British politics as preparation for standing as an MP. Within two years he was appearing in its pages himself, and when he died in 1965 the Register devoted a special preface to him.

The online version of The Annual Register provides researchers with a variety of features that allow them immediate access to the information they need.  It offers both Quick Search and Advanced Search capabilities, including functionality allowing users to automatically include broader meanings and variant spellings in their searches.  The online version also allows users to browse the volumes of the Register, offering opportunities for both pleasure reading and serendipitous discovery.
