Set up to collect and exhibit portraits of `men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development, and culture of the people of the United States', the National Portrait Gallery now holds the single most important and interesting collection of American portaiture anywhere. Remarkable for the significance of the subjects portrayed, the range of artists and the wide variety of media they employed, the collection brings together nearly 2,000 portraits of the key figures in American history from both famous and little-known artists providing art historians and other researchers with an unusual and wide-ranging resource.
