The National Library of Spain contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of Spanish books in the world. Originally a royal library founded in 1712 by Philip V, its collections, acquired through legal deposit, purchase, seizure and donation, cover every aspect of the nation's history and culture.

With the publication on microfiche of the Author Catalogues, the complete Catalogue of the Library's holdings of printed books to 1987 is made widely accessible providing scholars with an invaluable bibliographic source.

The microfiche edition is in two parts: the main catalogue, with over 2,000,000 cards covering works from the sixteenth century to 1981, never published before, and the 1982-1987 catalogue containing a further 440,000 cards, published as a single cumulated author index for the first time.
