The 51 titles that were indexed here provided biographical information from a wide range of human endeavor. The names found here are often not mentioned in standard historical sources, but their lives and achievements are integral to any understanding of the Black experience in America over the past two centuries. During a period when African Americans were denied public acknowledgement, biographical accounts were compiled and published within the community to document the ambitions and successes of its members. This index archive records the life and times of these 19th and 20th century Afro-Americans.

This one volume index includes full name, birth and death dates, place of birth, occupation and religious affiliation for each individual, as well as the location of every biographical sketch and every photograph.
