New York Botanical Garden Vascular Plant Type Collection

For a century now the herbarium at the New York Botanical Garden has been the depository for large collections of great historical significance. The present accumulation of some four million sheets grew around a nucleus of the Columbia University Herbarium. During the early years a number of private herbaria containing important Western Hemisphere collections were added. At the same time a policy of exploration was introduced - mainly of tropical America - which continues to this day and has brought great numbers of specimens in large sets to the Garden.
