A clippings file of 1.5 million items on more than 80,000 painters, sculptors, architects, craftspeople, jewellers, furniture and interior designers, commercial artists, fashion designers, collectors, connoisseurs, critics and curators, on microfiche.

One of the most heavily used collections in The New York Public Library, the Artists File is a major source of biographical and other information on artists and craftspeople from all over the world. The first point of reference on thousands of artists about whom little other literature exists, the File is also an important visual resource containing many reproductions not otherwise accessible or recorded.

The range of material is extremely broad with clippings from newspapers worldwide and popular and specialist magazines together with press releases, auction and exhibition catalogues, letters, engravings, reproductions and original photographs. Though started in 1911, the Artists File contains much nineteenth-century material adding greatly to the value of the collection.

`These files are an indispensable supplement to published biographical dictionaries and indices.'
Don Anderle, Associate Director for Special Collections, The New York Public Library
