Nineteenth-century music periodicals offer rich documentation of musical life as it developed in the 1800s. The growth of musical romanticism coincided with a widespread expansion of the press, and journals and newspapers with a musical focus appeared throughout Europe and North America. Répertoire International de la Presse Musicale (RIPM) provides access to these valuable periodicals--through comprehensive bibliographic indexes and full-text microfilm of music periodicals published from the late 18th to the early 20th century.

RIPM is produced in cooperation with the Center for Studies in 19th-Century Music at the University of Maryland, College Park, and published under the auspices of the International Musicological Society and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centers. H. Robert Cohen, the General Editor, directs the Center for Studies in 19th-Century Music, which functions in cooperation with a similar research center in Parma, Italy. Those serving as editors include Marcello Conati and Christoph-Hellmut Mahling.

Twenty-nine core journals from several countries were chosen for inclusion by the international board of distinguished music scholars, librarians, and archivists. The periodicals fall within the following language groupings: English, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Danish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Polish, Portugese, and Swedish. The periodicals are indexed in their language of origin.

The RIPM Indexes Each RIPM title contains an annotated table of contents or calendar (listing the contents of each issue of the journal chronologically with notes), an alphabetical keyword/author index for cross-referencing, and a brief outline of the journal placing it in its historical context written in English. A total of 57 volumes are available.

Full-text Microfilm Music periodicals from this era allow scholars and students to view musical life as it was perceived by its contemporaries. Musicologists can analyze and trace the development of romantic music through reviews, analyses, illustrations, and accounts of composers, compositions, and performances. The 19th-century musical press provides a matchless chronicle of the period's unique musical life. With full-text microfilm of journals, students can locate information about composers, musicians, and performances unavailable in other sources.
