New York Theater, 1919 - 1961

26,000 photographs from the Vandamm Collection in The New York Public Library, Library and Museum of the Performing Arts.
`There was hardly a Broadway show or star she did not shoot from the Barrymores to Bobby Clark.'
New York Times, March 16 1966
Founder and proprietor with her husband of the Vandamm Studio, Florence Vandamm Thomas was described by one of her obituarists as 'Broadway's greatest theatrical photographer.' A Vandamm photo call became a New York theatre tradition with Florence Vandamm seeing the play several times in rehearsal before taking the photographs to be used for publicity.
The high technical quality of the studio's large-format photography together with the Vandamms' intuitive understanding of 'theatre' make this collection by far the most important visual record of the New York theatre in the twentieth century. Every famous name from the American stage is there.
