eLibrary®—the user-friendly general reference tool—delivers one of the largest general reference collections of periodical and digital media content designed to support every range of users, including middle and high school students, college-prep and college-level researchers, and professional educators. Educators can even search for resources that correlate to state and national standards, including Common Core State Standards.

eLibrary’s updated interface and features make research easy. Researchers will find the answers they need from more than 2,500 full-text magazines, newspapers, books, and transcript titles, plus a collection of over 7 million maps, pictures, weblinks, and audio/video files.

Titles cover a wide range of subjects including business, education, general interest, health, language arts, sciences, social sciences, and many other curriculum-specific subject areas.

Every magazine, journal, newspaper, book, and transcript is provided in 100 percent full-text—saving valuable search time and reducing the frustration of abstract-only results. Plus, the variety of multimedia content supplements and enhances text-only information.

Researchers will find quality information from eight different media types:

  • Magazines—Provide more than 1,600 full-text titles from general interest to scholarly publications. Popular titles include Fortune, National Geographic, Newsweek, Time, and The Economist.
  • Newspapers—Track trends and follow current events with more than 300 full-text titles national and international titles including the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, USA TODAY, Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
  • Books—Place information and topics in context using nearly 400 full-text (and image rich) reference books such as The World Almanac; The American Heritage Dictionary, 4th ed.; Hutchinson dictionaries and encyclopedias of science, history, arts and culture; the DK Eyewitness series, and the Britannica Spanish Encyclopedia.
  • Maps—Find over 7,000 topological, historical, thematic, and interactive maps from sources like National Geographic Map division and Maps.com.
  • Pictures—Explore more than 7,000,000 photos and images—both current and historical—of art and architecture, animals and plants, people and places, and more.
  • TV & Radio Transcripts—Get the final word on broadcast programs with over 1.3 million transcripts from popular TV and radio programs like CBS Evening News, CNN, National Public Radio, and Fox News.
  • Audio/Video—Use more than 20,000 streaming audio and video files to bring events and processes to life. Clips include historical footage, current news programs, animations of how things work, and more.
  • Weblinks—Search the web more effectively using more than 115,000 editor-screened and selected websites indexed by topics appropriate to K-12 study.

Accessing eLibrary 

Complex searching is easy with eLibrary's graphical navigation and point-and-click functionality. Users can select from natural language, Boolean, topic, standards, or publication search. They can also use advanced search fields to further target relevant information. Results can be sorted by relevance, date, file size, reading level/Lexile, publication, source, and more. Plus, users can print, save, or email any result, making it simple to use and share information.

Additional features make research easier:

  • Research Topic pages—Review the best (and most visually attractive) content, curated by editors, on more that 7,500 of the most popular search queries. A great starting point to learn the context behind the topic before exploring the article results.
  • Timeline tools, slideshow-makers, and personalization features, including inline notetaking, available through the MyeLibrary functionality promote responsible use of digital content and research collaboration; and help strengthen alignment to Common Core State Standards requirements.
  • Standards search—Find eLibrary resources linked directly to state, national, and international standards for learning, including the Common Core State Standards.
  • Topic search—Narrow queries by selecting a topic, then conducting a keyword search related to the topic. Saves time and increases result relevancy.
  • Reference search—Query a subset of reference works including encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, and almanacs that help users find basic subject information, definitions, biographies, timelines, and more.
