About MARC records for dissertations and theses
Divided line

As part of the ProQuest Dissertation Publishing service, our staff editors carefully compile relevant bibliographic information about each dissertation or theses that is published. That bibliographic data is used as the basis for MARC records.

Free MARC Records for Publishing Partners

Universities that actively publish dissertations and theses with ProQuest Dissertation Publishing are entitled to free MARC records for their submitted graduate works. The records are machine-generated level 7 ("K" level) records and are considered a good starting point for your catalogers. Your catalogers can repurpose our MARC records to describe holdings in your physical collection or institutional repository.

As a further convenience, ProQuest Dissertation Publishing will add a URL to the 856u tag that will link to the bibliographic record within the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database. (Upon request, records can be delivered without the URL.)

We offer two electronic formats: US MARC and a format created by ProQuest which we call DCI MARC (used mostly by vendors or users who are not loading to OPACs and do not require the standard header information.) More detailed information and tag description charts may be found here Tag Description Chart. For a sample in the US MARC format click here: for the sample DCI MARC format, click here.

Permitted Uses of ProQuest-Produced MARC Records

MARC records generated by ProQuest Dissertation Publishing may also be added to an electronic index or OPAC in the state in which they are delivered.

If the ProQuest K level record has been modified or enhanced by a library, then it may be loaded into a bibliographic utility.
