In addition to engagement and marriage announcements, historical newspapers contained letters, classified ads, inspirational accounts of first meetings, and display ads that helped would-be suitors and sweethearts find and keep each other. Note how, in the first example below, the reach of local newspapers such as the Chicago Defender often extended well beyond the publication's home region.
