In times of abundance and in scarcity, the newspaper was a woman's best friend as she tried to feed her family and take care of her home. The following 1902 issue of The Baltimore Afro-American rang in the new year with not only recipes and household tips for the homemaker, but also with a call for black women to respect themselves and to demand respect from the men in their homes.

And, of course, there's that tomato jelly salad recipe....
