Publication of the microfiche edition of the Catalogues of the Bibliothèque Nationale, including both the card and printed catalogues, was an event of great significance for French bibliography and librarianship.
Published here for the first time, the card catalogue allows users everywhere access to 1.26 million works acquired since 1897 but not included in the printed catalogues. Only by using both the card and printed catalogues can bibliographers and researchers obtain a complete overview of twentieth-century French publications as well as acquisitions since 1896 of many thousands of earlier works in other languages.
The main printed catalogue is reproduced from the corrected `working' copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale which contains over 60,000 corrections and amendments. This gives libraries with printed volumes the opportunity to replace them with a corrected edition that occupies a fraction of the space.
