Overview

`The collections of charters and rolls in the British Library are of the greatest research importance for historians. The fact that these valuable calendars will be made more widely available is greatly to be welcomed.'
David Smith, Director, The Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, University of York

Many of the British Library's greatest treasures are to be found within its collections of charters and rolls. The calendars are the only fully descriptive catalogue of these invaluable collections in existence.

Publication of the calendars on microfilm makes the charter collections widely accessible for the first time, bringing to the attention of historians many significant documents rarely, if ever, studied before.

The calendars contain short summaries of the contents of charters acquired by the Department of Manuscripts up to 1911 and are of bibliographical interest in their own right. With entries for over 75,000 documents they represent an essential research resource for scholars of medieval and early modern British and European history.
