Overview

The remarkable herbarium of the California Academy of Sciences reproduced on microfiche.

During the second half of the nineteenth century the herbarium of the California Academy of Sciences became the largest and most important research collection in the region with over 2,000 types from California and western North America. One of the few Academy collections to survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the herbarium continued to flourish as a major centre for floristic and taxonomic research.

Strengthened by the addition of several private herbaria, it was integrated with the Dudley Herbarium of Stanford University in 1976 thereby gaining two major historical collections: the G. Gautier Herbarium and a duplicate of the Harvey Herbarium including early collections from Europe, Africa, Australia, the Indian Ocean and Asia.
