Bringing History to Life

Black Biographical Dictionaries, 1790-1950, brings together over 30,000 biographical references and thousands of portraits of black Americans, both famous and lesser known, reflecting the richness of black experience over two centuries.

Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970, charts the growth and development of more than 12,000 American towns and cities for over a century. Originally created to assist fire insurance companies as they assessed the risk associated with insuring property, the more than 660,000 Sanborn maps list street blocks and building numbers, indicate street size and width, outline property boundaries and other features, and indicate building use and construction materials. Also available on CD-ROM, these maps are a valuable tool for genealogists.

A People at War is a collection of letters, diaries, memoirs, and other personal papers of more than 350 people on both sides of the Civil War. Part of the Civil War holdings of the Library of Congress, this collection helps students and researchers understand the real life experiences and feelings of the people who lived during this important event in American history.
