The major pre-1940 printed material with some manuscripts.

"By making all the essential materials of Dickens studies easily available in compact form, the Charles Dickens Research Collection renders an unprecedented service to scholarship."
Sylvère Monod, University of Paris

The Charles Dickens Research Collection is the most comprehensive body of material by and about Charles Dickens and his world ever assembled in a single edition.

From the immense number of books and articles on every facet of Dickens and his writing published before 1940, an editorial board of internationally recognised scholars has chosen those of most significance, value and often rarity. Many unique items are made widely available for research for the first time.

Central to the collection of over 700 items and works reproduced on microfilm is the J.F. Dexter Collection, assembled by John Furber Dexter (1847-1927), the first and greatest collector of early Dickens editions and Dickensiana, and purchased by the British Library in 1969.

The editors have also been able to draw on the finest privately owned collection of Dickensiana: that of Comte Alain de Suzannet (1882-1950) of Lausanne, almost half of which was given by his widow to the Dickens House Museum.

"The editors' aim throughout has been the creation for academic and public libraries of a comprehensive collection of both primary and secondary Dickens material that will support the study, teaching, and research of Charles Dickens at all levels."
Graham Storey, Trinity Hall, Cambridge
Chairman of the Editorial Board
