The Collective Catalogue of Hebrew Manuscripts

The Collective Catalogue of Hebrew Manuscripts on microfiche reproduces two major catalogues at the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem: the catalogue of the Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts and that of the Library's own Department of Manuscripts.

The first contains details of around 50,000 codices and 200,000 fragments found in some 700 collections traced in libraries, museums, cathedrals, colleges, synagogues and private collections in 30 countries. The Institute has been systematically collecting Hebrew manuscripts since 1950 and new items, now recorded in an on-line catalogue, are being added all the time.

The Jewish National and University Library's own collection of Hebrew manuscripts includes some 7,750 manuscript codices from the 10th century onwards, some of them finely illuminated.

A union catalogue of virtually all the Hebrew manuscript holdings in the world, the Collective Catalogue is an essential reference work for all researchers in Jewish and Hebrew studies and biblical history. Access is provided by 12 separate indexes together with a printed introduction and user's guide.
