Overview

After serving as a soldier in the Revolutionary Army, Timothy Pickering soon became one of the U.S.'s first Postmasters General. He is credited with organizing and increasing the efficiency of the U.S. Postal Service. He also served as Secretary of War, and then Secretary of State for several years.

In addition to Pickering's personal correspondence from and to various close family members, the collection also contains his business and legal papers. Of special interest are tracts and newspaper articles promoting his views on various government officials (including the President), as well as the most hotly debated issues of the day.

Titles from the Massachusetts Historical Society Collections may be purchased by individual reel.
