Spanning the era of World War I up to 1985, the material in this collection provides a stimulating resource never before available in a single package.

Journalism students and media researchers will have available the full-text version of every copyright-cleared Pulitzer Prize in journalism awarded for the past 68 years. Included are winning entries for editorial writing, local reporting, public service reporting, cartoons, and foreign correspondence, as well as more recently-established categories such as commentary, criticism, and feature writing. Special awards and citations are also presented.

A spectrum of major events, vital issues, and memorable moments are covered, such as:

  • The day-to-day progress of Hitler's rise to power
  • Ernie Pyle's 1943 war correspondence
  • The Three Mile Island nuclear accident
  • Hodding Carter's famous editorials on the subject of racial, religious, and economic intolerance

This is the history of 20th-century America and the world in the words of writers who lived, reported, and commented on that history-- journalists such as Roger Ebert, George Will, Walter Lippman, Louis Stark, and Ernie Pyle. These articles come from newspapers as diverse as The Christian Science Monitor, The Detroit Free Press, and The Arkansas Gazette, as well as The New York Times and The Washington Post.

This collection is a fabulous resource for students of journalism, creative writing, and mass communications. It is also an important addition for libraries containing comprehensive collections in American history or world history.
