Overview

"Architecture never had a more dedicated follower or generous benefactor than John Soane."
Dorothy Stroud

This color microfilm collection contains both drawings and sketches by Sir John Soane arising from his numerous commissions in London and the provinces, together with the many fine drawings by contemporaries and earlier architects he amassed during his lifetime.

Relatively little-known, his personal collection of architectural and ornamental drawings ranges from fifteenth-century Italian drawings through the work of Elizabethan architect John Thorpe to the designs of later predecessors such as Sir Christopher Wren and contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers and George Dance. These exceptionally well preserved drawings represent a rich and varied research resource for historians of English and Italian architecture and design. The plans and drawings from Sir John Soane's own practice - from rough sketches to framed Royal Academy exhibits - are a valuable testimony to one of England's great architects.
