Overview

Edited by Beverly Wilson Palmer

". . . an individual voice, always so personal, often almost comic, essentially so natural, in spite of that note of the orator which is perceptible from the first."
Henry James writing in 1903

The publication in a single edition of virtually the entire known correspondence of influential anti-slavery and civil rights campaigner, Charles Sumner (1811-1874) is an event of major importance for scholars concerned with the events and personalities of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Sumner was a major influence on both domestic and foreign policy in the Lincoln, Johnson, and Grant presidencies attracting both widespread support and bitter censure. The microfilm collection brings together for the first time more than 26,000 letters written over 45 years touching on almost every aspect of American intellectual and political life.
