CIA Research Project is an outstanding collection of primary sources that would be of great use to the serious scholar and to the undergraduate student working on a term paper. China includes assessments of the civil war and its immediate consequences at home and elsewhere in Asia. Communist morale and dissent were evaluated periodically, as were the major leaders on both sides. The Cultural Revolution of the late 1960s was the focus of several essays examining its many facets. Topics that never made headlines were also treated, such as relations between the army, the party, and the provincial authorities, and efforts at educational reforms.
