Overview

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has the statutory responsibility to regulate civilian nuclear activities so that the public health and safety, national security, and environmental quality are protected, and so that the antitrust laws are obeyed. Since its establishment in January 1975, the NRC has carried out its responsibilities in an atmosphere of widespread public debate over issues associated with the uses of nuclear technology. The forum for this debate - and the forum in which the NRC itself grapples with the crucial problems that it faces almost daily - lies in the hearings of the NRC. UPA's publication of these hearings - including both the open and the closed sessions - makes available this massive, invaluable source of information. There can be no doubt that Hearings of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission forms the single most comprehensive collection on all phases of the nuclear industry, and yet no library in the world was previously able to acquire a set of these hearings. This kind of complete coverage makes Hearings of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission an indispensable resource for the study and formulation of nuclear policy.
