Overview

Part I: Minutes of Meetings of the Commission, 1915-1949 Records of the Federal Trade Commission is a UPA series that includes major collections from the voluminous archives of the commission. Part I of the series, Minutes of Meetings of the Commission, 1915-1949, gives the researcher the opportunity to observe the inner workings of the FTC as it conducts investigations, issues cease and desist orders, brings injunctive suits, makes recommendations for the readjustment of businesses, and compiles information and statistics concerning all facets of business falling under its jurisdiction. Published for the first time, these minutes are a comprehensive summary of all of the commission's deliberations and thus form an outstanding resource for those researching the interplay of political, business, and social interests in 20th-century America. Created by the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914, the FTC was given wide-ranging authority to combat unfair methods of competition in business. By 1921, buoyed by the "trustbusting" temper of the Progressive Era, the commission had issued nearly 400 cease and desist orders and had helped to secure the breakup of several monopolies. The commission's influence over American businesses (and, by extension, American consumers) has been incalculable from its inception.
