Overview

This collection consists of research studies conducted by an elite group of private and governmental organizations, commonly known as "think tanks," and government agencies, whose urgent task has been to learn as much as possible about the causes and the repercussions of the drug problem. The authors of these studies are associated with several of the finest research facilities in the United States_the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Institute for Behavioral Research, the Naval War College, the Institute for Defense Analysis, American Institutes for Research, National Research Council, National Institutes of Health, among others_as well as with various federal agencies and such major universities as Harvard, Columbia, the University of Michigan, and the University of Pennsylvania. The studies focus on three themes: the various forms of societal drug use; attempts to control and treat drug addiction, and efforts by law enforcement authorities to interdict drug trafficking
