Overview

The radical movements of the 1960s spawned a multitude of underground newspapers. The causes they espoused or opposed were as diverse as the issues they confronted. It was the era of the Vietnam War, of opposition to corporate America and its power, of questioning and rejecting traditional values.

This unparalleled microfilm collection allows students and researchers access to more than 550 underground newspapers dating from 1963 to 1985, including such well-known titles as:

  • The Berkeley Barb (Berkeley)
  • Creative Loafing (Atlanta)
  • Haight Ashbury Tribune (San Francisco)
  • High Times (New York)
  • The New Paper (Providence)

Also gathered in this collection are such obscure titles as:

  • A Four-Year Bummer--An Airman's Voice (Champaign, Illinois)
  • Gay Insurgent (Philadelphia)
  • Hair (Minneapolis)
  • Mom. . .Guess What! (Sacramento)
  • The Red Mole (London)

The Hoover Supplement The Hoover Supplement was added to the Underground Press Collections in 1988. Filmed from holdings in the newspaper archives at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace, the supplement contains 266 titles. These include 88 missing issues from UMI®'s original collection and 178 additional titles. Publications in the Hoover Supplement reflect various perspectives of the late '60s and '70s, and include the following titles:

  • The Advocate (Los Angeles)
  • Health Rights News (Chicago)
  • Survival Press Review (Boulder)
  • Workers Vangard (New York)

The Hoover Institution is an independent research organization located at Stanford University. Continuing its tradition of providing researchers with materials essential to the study of social change, the Institution allowed UMI to film its holdings.

The University of Missouri--Columbia Supplement UMI is now distributing the University of Missouri--Columbia Underground Press Collection as a supplement to our holdings. The collection was filmed at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, which is recognized as one of the leading journalism schools in the country. This important collection contains 123 titles from the early 1960s through the late 1970s, including:

  • The Berkeley Monitor (Berkeley)
  • The Drummer (Philadelphia)
  • Labor Challenge (Toronto)
  • Space City (Houston)

The Alternative Press Center Supplement

Since 1969, the Alternative Press Center in Baltimore has gathered and indexed “publications which amplify the cry for social change and social justice.” 460 of the titles from their collection are filmed in this supplement, including:

  • The Animals’ Agenda (Westport, Conn.)
  • Anarchy (London)
  • The Catholic Worker (New York)
  • Big Mama Rag (Denver)

The Underground Press Collections is a valuable record of radical thought and counter-culture opinion. The views expressed in these publications are relevant to the study of history, education, literature, journalism, sociology, law, psychology, and other subjects.

In addition to the original units, the Underground Press collection is available in collections organized by the state or country of publication. Please contact your ProQuest representative for more information.
