From the holdings of the Alliance Israelite Universelle in Paris, the Franco-Jewish Pamphlets research collection in microform offers a unique perspective on world events and everyday life over four centuries.   Pamphlets range in date from 1616 to 1928, with most from the mid-1800's to the early 1900's.

The Alliance Israelite Universelle, located in Paris, France, was founded in 1860. It is one of the most significant international organizations for research and teaching of Jewish culture.  The Alliance's objective is to create greater awareness of Jewish culture, remaining true to tradition and tolerant and open to the modern world.  The Alliance boasts one of the most important collections of Judaica in the world, housed in the library, which includes a great number of treasures, such as an extraordinary collection of Hebrew manuscripts and a substantial collection of Rabbi Zadoc Kahn's sermons and brochures.

From the riches of this library comes the Franco-Jewish pamphlet collection -- never before available on microfilm.  This collection of 1,181 Franco-Jewish pamphlets contains:

  • Full text of sermons given by notable rabbis, many unpublished anywhere else
  • Treatises on Jewish customs and traditions
  • Articles and observations concerning anti-Semitism
  • Zadoc Kahn's speeches from the 1890s

Covering the mid-1800s up to the 1920s, these pamphlets portray the cultural, spiritual and religious life of Jews in Paris as well as in the French colonies of North Africa.   For the most part in French, there are a small number of pamphlets in English, German, Hebrew Italian and Latin.
