Overview

Napoléon, sa famille et son entourage: documents du Musée Historique d'État, Moscou is a historically important collection of more than 2500 Napoleonic documents held in the archives of the State Historical Museum of Moscow.

The collection includes about 30 letters and documents in Napoléon's own hand or containing his signature, approximately 100 documents written or signed by the Bonaparte family members, and more than 2400 documents from his military and political entourage.   Of note are several letters handwritten by the Empress Joséphine, containing, for example, inquiries about her taxes  and a request that Napoléon be protected during her absence.

The two most substantial groups of documents come from the private collections of Count Grigorii Vladimirovich Orlov and the well-known art collector Petr Ivanovich Shchukin. The collection was compiled by F.A. Petrov and A.D. Ianovskii. It includes a preface by Jean Tulard and foreword by Marc Raeff.  Please note that it is possible to purchase the catalogue to the collection separately.

Napoléon, sa famille et son entourage provides the administrative details of running an army as well as addressing the cultural and scientific concerns of an epoch dominated by the towering presence of Napoléon.
