Building on the positive response to Statistical Abstract of the United States, this new product aggregates the statistical abstracts of nearly 50 countries and makes the content available through a single-search interface. These statistical abstracts are generally issued by the national statistical offices of foreign governments and contain country-level data not easily found elsewhere. Global and regional statistical compendia issued by international organizations and research firms are also included.
Users will be able to browse the tabular content of each compendia section by section, apply table-specific filters to narrow results, and search across all content or within a single country as well as view and download a table in a spreadsheet. In its look and feel and overall functionality, the product will resemble Statistical Abstract of the United States—but with much broader coverage of content.
These publications are difficult to find, and if you do find them, they are found in a variety of formats and languages on websites maintained by foreign government statistical offices.
Researchers are asking for it – more international data; and not just at the country level – they need sub-national data.
When the product released, we had 39 countries' abstracts – and more are coming. We expect to have 50 countries loaded in by the end of 2014.
More is being demanded of students, in terms of their data acumen; they need to know how to solve problems with numbers and data - to make sense of it, predict outcomes, apply technologies, and effectively communicate quantitative arguments.
Students need international data to compare one country to another, or to create a statistical portrait of a country or market for a business plan or other project.
