ProQuest Search Widget Implementation Guide

You can quickly and easily create customized search widgets to add to your pages.

Start on the ProQuest Search Widget page. Follow these steps to create your widget:

  1. Type the Database IDs, separated by commas in the Databases field. You may enter up to 15 databases. Leave this field blank to search across all of your ProQuest databases.
  2. If you want to limit your search, check Full text documents only or Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed.
  3. Enter the Proxy URL for your organization if one is used. If you don't know the Proxy URL, check with your proxy administrator. If you use Innovative (III) see below for special instructions.
    Instructions for specific authentication types:
    • EZ Proxy
      Make sure to include /login?url= at the end.
      Examples --
      http://proxy.lib.edu:2048/login?url=
      http://000.58.210.244:2048/login?url=
    • Custom
      Make sure to end the proxy URL with the parameter that accepts the target URL.
      Example --
      http://custom.proxy.lib.edu/login?u=
    • Innovative (III):
      After the widget is generated, edit the the code to replace http://proquest.umi.com in the search URL with your proxy server URL.
      Example --
      Change'http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?RQT=305&FT=1&DBId=3&SQ=' to
      'http://0-www.proquest.com.catalog.library.collegeu.edu/pqdweb?RQT=305&FT=1&DBId=3&SQ= '
  4. Enter any search terms you want the search to include. Each search term should be separated by commas. (Search terms will be combined using AND.) The limit for this field is 60 characters.
  5. Make selections for the Search Box appearance, including:
    • Logo Select ProQuest logo or the label ProQuest Search.
    • Logo location If you selected to use the ProQuest logo, select where to display the logo.
    • Search Button location Select where to place the search button.
    • Border color Enter a color for the border using the Hexadecimal Color Code or use the Color Picker option to select from the color palette.
    • Background color Enter a color for the background using the Hexadecimal Color Code or use the Color Picker option to select from the color palette.
    • Length of text box Select a length for the text entry field between 15 and 60 characters.
  6. You can preview your selections in the Preview area. The preview will be automatically updated when you change your selections. When the settings meet your needs, click Create Widget.
Add the Search Widget to Your Page

Follow these steps to add the Widget to your web page:

  1. Click the Copy code to clipboard link to copy the javascript code for the Search Widget.
  2. Open the web page you would like to place the Search Widget on in an HTML editor.
  3. In the "Source View" mode of your HTML editor, paste the Search Widget code where you want it to appear on your web page. (If you are working in a program such as Dreamweaver in design view, make sure to paste the HTML code.)
  4. Save the page.
