National Agricultural Library Pre-1870 American Seed Trade Catalogs
Over 500 seed trade catalogues issued by 250 seed companies between 1790 and 1870 providing a graphic insight into the development of the nursery and agricultural business in America in the nineteenth century.
The growth of the seed trade in nineteenth-century America mirrored the increase in population and general prosperity and the nation's westward expansion. Consequently these catalogues will be valuable to researchers working not just on the agricultural and horticultural industries but also on the broader economic and social history of this period. Much of the agricultural and horticultural information in the catalogues is not available elsewhere while many are also minor works of art with fine illustrations of scientific value and varied design and type styles.
