Abstract
Indeed, National Education Policy -2020 (NEP 2020) aims to bring revolutionary and innovative transformation in Indian education System. The NEP 2020 would bring a sea change in planning, implementation, governance and accreditation of educational courses and systems in India. The policy envisions that the well- qualified, skilled, quality and competent teachers are the essential and inseparable components of the process of imparting Outcome based as well as skills based education. As per the existing teacher recruitment norms, the School and the Junior College teachers require to have the relevant Teacher Education qualification (D.Ed./B.Ed.)
However, the recruitment norms of faculty in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) and Universities do not require any formal Teacher Education qualification. The lack of proper training and knowledge of educational pedagogies and methods would result in poor teacher learning experiences that would affect the quality of education in HEIs. Therefore, compulsory formal teacher education for higher education faculty would enable the (HEIs) and Universities in effective implementation of the objectives of NEP 2020, obtain high accreditation by prevailing accreditation bodies/regulatory authorities and imparting Out Come Based and Skills based education to the students.
The paper provides recommendations for introducing Compulsory formal teacher education for the teachers in HEIs for enhancing the quality of teaching learning processes and implementing objectives of NEP 2020. Moreover, the paper would review and revise the proposed teacher education plans and policies of NEP 2020.
