SIM: Introduction
UMI® serials in microform from UMI can be the solution to your information storage and access problems. UMI microforms have been in use for nearly 70 years, so their benefits are well-known and well-proven. Use this SIM catalog to help you get started in viewing UMI's newspaper and special serials titles, and generating a request for quote (see details in How to Order). While you'll find many titles to suit your needs in the SIM, it's best to contact your representative for a comprehensive list of titles in your area of interest. This UMI Serials in Microform (SIM) catalog includes titles offered by ProQuest as part of the UMI Newspapers in Microform product line, including print newspaper indexes. Please note that UMI® Periodicals in Microform are now available exclusively from National Archive Publishing Company. Please visit the NAPC web site to view UMI Periodicals in Microform titles. We live in a rapidly changing world. New technology gives us more choices when it comes to full text: in addition to the paper-copy serial, we can increasingly find a growing number of newspapers in full-text ASCII or image format via online services. But throughout these changing times one thing has remained constant: microform — the only medium guaranteed to exactly and completely replicate the print newspaper in an archival format. And new microform viewer/scanners let libraries integrate microform content with their virtual library, providing a bridge to digital for their patrons. If you need any newspaper title, no matter how hard to find, UMI probably has the microform edition—an exact photographic reproduction, the full image of the publication. If you don't see the title you need listed in this catalog, please let us know by contacting us at 800-521-0600 ext. 2793. Publishing Rights, Contracts, and Copyright
To offer in microform the titles listed in this catalog, UMI has entered into contractual agreements with the publisher of each title. This assures you that UMI has specific permission to sell and distribute the microform copy of each publication, and that copyright restrictions are being complied with for the original sale of the microform copy. Microform serials are protected against unauthorized copying by the Copyright Act of 1976. They contain copyrighted material of both UMI and publishers of the original documents. It is the responsibility of the purchasing company or institution to ensure that microform serials are used in a way that is consistent with copyright law. This includes the reproduction of articles on microform reader-printers and any electronic reproduction/transmission from the microform itself or from paper copies produced from microform. UMI has many quality assurance processes in place to guarantee that customers always receive the finest quality micrographic products. However, in a few cases, the contractual arrangements with publishers are for marketing and sales rights only--the publisher provides the microform copy for distribution to the customer. Under these agreements, UMI does not produce the microform copy being issued. When customer concerns regarding quality are made known to us, we will make every attempt to resolve the situation to the customer's satisfaction. In some cases, however, the final quality decision lies with the publisher. Microform: Storage and Access Medium Par Excellence
