Abstract

Alternate abstract:

This article argues that, for Mill, liberty is not merely a means to social and cultural progress, but also a necessary condition for human happiness and one of its components. This premise, in turn, leads us to an examination of his concept of happiness (as something distinct from mere satisfaction) in close relation to the attainment of equal rights for women, since it is only in this situation that moral sentiments can fully develop themselves.
