Anyone who's seen Aaron Sorkin/ David Fincher's film The Social Network knows the story: Frustrated, young Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg starts a website to impress his Ivy League companions and invents a world-changing tech service. The history of Facebook isn't just IPOs and headquarters changes though; delving into its many feature updates, we can see a glimpse of not only how Facebook has changed this past decade but also the Internet itself. The world's first social network has been many things to many people over the years, and not all of them successful. E-Connect will break down a brief history of Facebook features.
2004
"TheFacebook" launches! Initially limited to only those with a university e-mail address, TheFacebook allowed students to send messages and invites, upload photos and otherwise stay virtually connected to their classmates. Users could list their hometown, their relationship status, contact information and educational background. Users could "friend," "unfriend," and block each other and write on each other's walls.
2005
High schools are added for the first time, as well as several tech companies. The service's name is changed to simply "Facebook" (definite articles are so last year). 2006
