U.K.’s national library partners with ProQuest to give patrons access to reader reviews, author bios, other key search data

CAMBRIDGE, UK, January 15, 2019 – The British Library is improving the performance of its online catalogue with Syndetics Unbound™, a ProQuest enrichment service that helps libraries create an interactive search experience for their users.

With more than 150 million items in its catalogue – including books, magazines, newspapers, patents, electronic files and more – the British Library is one of the world’s largest libraries, housing copies of all publications produced in the U.K. and Ireland.

Now, when patrons search the British Library’s main catalogue enhanced with Syndetics Unbound data, they’ll see rich, dynamic information that helps them not only choose the right book, but also find related titles and materials in the library through recommendations, reviews, tags and more.

“The British Library is delighted to integrate Syndetics Unbound into its catalogue and ‘Explore the British Library’ based on the Primo® discovery service,” said Chris Martyn, Collection Metadata Systems Manager and Frances Lill, Electronic Services Manager, both of The British Library. “The enriched data of Syndetics Unbound will dynamically improve the user experience of the library’s main catalogue.”

All Syndetics Unbound data is derived from Bowker, the world’s leading authority for bibliographic and publisher information, and LibraryThing, which provides high-quality, professionally vetted social and recommendations data. In total, 16 interactive elements are available from Syndetics Unbound, any of which can be turned on or off by library administrators.

“The British Library is a truly world-class cultural and intellectual resource,” said Rich Belanger, Senior Vice President and General Manager, ProQuest Books. “We’re honored to partner with them to enrich their catalogue and enhance patrons’ experiences as they explore the library’s tremendous collections.”
