Evidence-based acquisition model helps Victoria University build a collection to rival world’s premier research institutions

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, March 15, 2019 – Faculty and students at Melbourne-based Victoria University now have access to 75 online multidisciplinary resources from ProQuest – the same primary sources that are staples in the world’s top academic libraries.

Victoria University’s new databases include core collections such as the Art & Architecture Archive, House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, ProQuest History Vault™, Periodicals Archive Online, Education Magazine Archive, Social Work Online, global studies databases and many more.

Victoria University chose these databases after an in-depth analysis of their curriculum using a model developed by ProQuest’s academic analysts. This analysis identifies gaps and offers specific examples of databases that could be used by students and faculty, ultimately helping the university acquire exactly what it needs and driving more usage.

Victoria University will also benefit from an evidence-based acquisition model that enables the library to dramatically expand access to primary sources overnight while steadily building their owned collections based on usage. This will help them stay within budget and support the need for both immediate access and long-term ownership.

"The main advantage for Victoria University in working with ProQuest is in the evidence-based model, which we have effectively used with ebooks in the past," said Brian Tyrrell, Manager, Information Resources and Collection Services, Victoria University. “The model enables a great opportunity to expose Victoria University’s staff and students to a richer content base, and a means of gauging which of these areas receive the greatest positive response – therefore proving a return on investment.”

“ProQuest is pleased to help Victoria University expand their access to world-class primary sources through this unique and flexible model,” said Susan Bokern, Vice President of Product Management at ProQuest.  “We’re honored to help them build a library that supports the research, teaching and learning needs of their faculty and students, and the vision of their university community.”
