Throughout the next few months, we are offering a multi-part webinar series exploring topics on library transformation.

This is the first in the series, a Q&A with industry thought leader Ken Chad. Ken discusses ways to rethink your library workflows and systems through the eyes of your users. In addition to the webinar, we also asked Ken some detailed questions regarding his findings working with various libraries in the UK.

Q: What percentage of current acquisitions budgets are spent on electronic materials?
A: For many of the universities I’m working with, it’s more than 80%.
Q: What are the electronic vs. print trends in those libraries?  As you think about a next generation Library Services Platform, shouldn’t you look at what your users prefer?  Specifically:

-    What is the trend for circulation?
A: In the UK, a key issue in terms of technology is the almost ubiquitous (RFID)-based self-services that now handle nearly 90% of circulation transactions. In some libraries, there is no longer a circulation desk, so that alone has had a huge impact on library system workflows.

-    How have acquisition methods changed?
A: There is some very useful information from one of the JISC projects I did, which illustrates how acquisitions methods have changed in regards to creation, curation, and consumption. Learn more here.

-    Are you using DDA?
A: DDA (also referred to as PDA) is becoming much more common. I’ve done a number of case studies, drawn from real-life examples, documenting the role that metadata plays in the patron-driven acquisition of ebooks.

Q: Overall, what are your thoughts on the next generation of systems?  With the dramatic changes to library workflows, how should new management systems reflect that reality?
A: One issue I confront quite a bit as I deal with higher education libraries is the need to look holistically at the 'ecosystem.' Print and e-resources as we (and most next-gen systems) think of them now are just a part of this. There are still significant issues, including workflows, around:

-    Research including institutional repositories, research processes and research data. Library support for research is one of the top issues, for especially Russell Group, libraries in the UK. In addition to institutional repositories, libraries may manage a number of other repositories –various digital collections.
-    Reading list software is booming in the UK, and to some extent in Australia and New Zealand, resulting in a significant impact on resource management workflows and the relationship with libraries and teaching & learning.
-    Learning resources are managed in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The VLE in some cases falls under the library remit.
-    Archives are managed in a separate system, have different staff and workflows, and are hard to integrate into discovery systems.
