The ASIANetwork began in 1992. It grew from a series of conferences to a consortium of over 170 North American colleges organized to encourage and strengthen Asian studies in undergraduate liberal arts education and to offer resources and programs to support firsthand experience of Asian cultures. With grants from the Henry Luce Foundation, Ford Foundation, Freeman Foundation, Japan Foundation, and Korea Society, ASIANetwork has been able to expand its activities and to provide consultation and training for member institutions.
One resource they make available is ASIANetwork Exchange, a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal containing research, “high-quality pedagogical essays,” and “articles that are suitable for incorporation in the undergraduate classroom.” It is published on the Open Journal Systems platform, which provides Search and Browse (by issue, author or title) features, links to information for readers, authors and librarians, and a notification system and font size controls.
Recent issues include Notes from the Editors, Articles, Book and Media Reviews, and thematic Special Sections. Articles range from “Islam and Ecology: Southeast Asia, Adat, and the Essence of Keramat” (which examines Christian and Muslim views of nature and religion) and “Between: Capital, Culture, and the Transformation of Hong Kong’s Universities” (which considers upcoming major educational reform at public universities in Hong Kong).
The thematic section covered in the latest issue is: “Networks and Identities as Revealed by Journeys in South Asia and the Himalayas,” with articles spanning an interdisciplinary range of Asian studies from history to art, to art history, religions, and more, Articles in this section included “Along the Grand Trunk Road: The Photography of Raghubir Singh,” and “The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya: Visual Expressions of a Tibetan Teacher's Path and Lineage in the Diaspora.” The aim of these articles is to provide background on specialized topics as well as suggest pedagogical approaches for teachers.
