In an effort to win back her husband from the dancing girls in Ha Noi, Nguyen Thi Van, a rural woman, took over VND5 million, from selling rice and pigs, to a beauty salon where she used the money to modify her nose, eyes and wipe out sunburn spots on her face. Unfortunately, her beautiful new eyes, nose and skin lasted for just over three months before their shape began to change. Her nose swelled with pain and her eyes and skin became uncomfortably itchy.
The doctor, after examination, told her that such symptoms were caused by the liquid silicon that was injected into her body parts. Silicon elements moved to her liver, kidneys and lungs, weakening their functions. As a result, she suffered from many diseases including arthritis and measles as well as others. Van looked at the name card of the beauty salon with the letters 'Beauty Salon X. .. Your Paradise' and regrettably said: "It is not a paradise but a hell."
Beauty salon mushrooms
Since the beginning of 1990s, hundreds of beauty salons have been established, raising a movement of beauty making among women in Ha Noi. In the streets, it was so easy to see blue and black eyelids as well as attractive red lips. However, a lack of supervision by the Ministry of Health (MoH) has resulted in the establishment of many beauty salons which do not satisfy the required standards of professional practices. This also resulted in dangerous consequences. In the first half of 1998, Military Hospital 108 received tens of after-beauty-surgical patients with complications.
