Compaction processes are more and more cost and technology driven. Decreasing lot sizes, smaller clearances and complicated asymmetric geometries of the work pieces are the trends in the compaction process. New press and tool concepts like multilevel application, split die, split punches, transverse punches and multi cavity compaction should support the new trends. The Powder Compaction Tooling reduce cost and increase the quality of the compaction process due to a technology chain, which combines a maximum of productivity through reduced setup times with increased form and position tolerances of the compaction tools and best alignment technologies. The Powder Compaction Tooling describes a technology for the successful implementation of the philosophy of reference clamping systems from the tool design over the tool shop up to the compaction process on the press. The control of the whole technology chain of the Powder Compaction Tooling system leads to reduced cost and increased quality.
Reduced lot sizes, shorter delivery times, increased quality demands, reduced clearance between the compaction tools and less energy consumption have been the main drivers in the powder compaction process in the last years.
Due to these drivers the usage of reference clamping systems in the compaction process was enforced and leads to a big step forward regarding technology and economy of the compaction of metal and ceramic powder.
Technology
- Increase of compaction quality, burr free compaction
- Compaction of high precision green parts
- Reduction of compaction tool clearances
- Multilevel and multicavity applications
- Compaction with transverse punches or split die
Economy
- Reduction of change over times
- Reduction of compaction tool cost due to reduced wear and damage of tools
- Reduction of production cost and production times of the compaction tools
The Powder Compaction Tooling technology consists of three main technology parts:
- Reference clamping systems (quick clamping systems)
- Work and data flow systems for the production and the usage of the compaction tools
- Measurement, analysis and alignment systems
Reference clamping systems, sometimes referred to as quick clamping systems, consist of reference elements and clamping fixtures.
The function and cost of a Powder Compaction Tooling system could be influenced in a wide range by combination of different reference elements and clamping fixtures.
