Abstract

The permanent increasing level of competition in the global economic landscape forced business organizations to continuously reinvent their strategic pursuit for process excellence and competitive advantage. Business intelligence (BI), a critical enterprise system built to provide business answers and insight for users at operational, tactical, and strategic levels is a common element in these endeavors. The complexity and the comprehensive integration requirements created significant challenges for optimal implementation of BI systems for any organization in any industry. The researcher of this dissertation focused the research on analyzing a BI initiative in a global entertainment organization. The purpose of this dissertation was to support and accelerate business value creation by describing and revealing insights regarding the drivers and inhibitors of a successful BI initiative. The exploratory case study was the appropriate design selection for the purpose and research of the study. The primary success drivers surfaced from data collection included a clear understanding of the intentions and goals of the BI initiative, expertise to deliver, and the identification of champions and involvement from the business. A few of the inhibitors were the level of understanding of the data and data quality, lack of differentiation against competitors and a lack of implementation, and understanding the required investment versus the return on investment for a BI endeavor. This study emphasized the importance for business and information systems leaders to consider the success drivers and inhibitors impacting a BI system initiative during the decision-making process.
