Abstract
Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects people of different genders, ages, races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual identities, and abilities. Women are at increased risk of suffering from a number of negative impacts with lifelong consequences. More healing options for survivors are needed. While crisis lines and shelters provide emergency services for IPV survivors in different stages of leaving abusive relationships, adventure therapy (AT) may provide support for those who are further into their recovery.
The purpose of this thesis was to create an AT curriculum to foster feelings of personal empowerment in survivors who are no longer in abusive relationships. The A.R.R.I.V.E. curriculum consists of a 3-day weekend camping retreat designed to address the needs of survivors. The curriculum is informed by three approaches: ecofeminism and ethical AT for women, metaphoric transfer, and group development for women. Participants will discover their strengths, cultivate social connections, develop healthy coping skills, and experience the healing effects of nature.
