Abstract

This study compared marital satisfaction evaluations of clergy and laity, exploring the roles of idealization, idealistic distortion and positive illusions in clergy perceptions. The study utilized a modified version of the ENRICH Marital Satisfaction scale and a random sample of clergy and lay participants (N=272) from United Methodist congregations in the United States. Clergy self ratings were relatively higher than lay self ratings and higher than their ratings of others' marriages. Since clergy often provide premarital and pastoral care in the midst of marriage, an accurate assessment of marital satisfaction is vital to their effectiveness as caregivers.
